Ten Good Reasons to get shopping locally
The Rural Community Council of Essex (RCCE) campaign Ten Good Reasons to shop locally went live at a launch event on Thursday 4th March
The new campaign led by RCCE and supported by Essex County Council through the Local Area Agreement – wants to get more people in rural Essex shopping in their local shops and supporting local services.The event, at the White Hart Hotel in Coggeshall saw
RCCE’s Kris Radley who has devised the campaign, said: "Ten Good Reasons stemmed from a desire to help promote local services and ensure they have a sustainable future. Research suggests that 75p of every pound spent in a small independent shop will reach the local economy, compared with just 15p spent in a branch of a supermarket chain. A campaign like this will help to preserve a sense of community in our villages and market towns, it also promotes civic pride ensuring our rural communities not only survive but also thrive."
Chief Executive of the Essex Chambers of Commerce John Clayton, who chaired the launch, said: "We're getting really upbeat about the energy that's been put into this campaign. The Essex Chamber of Commerce welcomes any initiative that promotes a vibrant, healthy, prosperous and diverse local economy "
The county wide scheme aims to promote local shops and services with a list of ten reasons for shopping locally examples include;
• Shopping locally reduces my carbon footprint
• Local stores are more likely to carry local produce.
Supporting locally-sourced goods and products.
• Local shops offer a distinctive shopping experience provided by independent, often innovative, traders who respond to customers needs.
